Varner followed up his 7-under on Round 1 by going 4-under 66 to take sole possession of first place. DeChambeau and Spieth were each among the top risers, going 5-under on Friday. But McIlroy had the best day of anyone on the course, shooting a 7-under to jump 35 spots into a tie for fourth at 9-under for the tournament. He had an eagle on 1 to highlight his big day.
