National Minority College Championship Players’ Paradox

HBCU players paradox in college golf

In a 2002 video, television journalist/sportscaster Bryant Gumble raises the  issue on his HBO Show Real Sports of the paradox of white golfers playing on historically black college golf teams.  Interviews include Founder of the National Minority College Championship and former Head Coach at Jackson State University Eddie Payton, Chicago State University Head Coach Craig Bowen (former Executive Director of the minority college golf organization, 1997-2000), Bethune-Cookman University Golf Head Coach the late Dr. Gary Freeman, former Tennessee State University Coach Catana Starks, Florida A&M’s Coach Marvin Green.

With black colleges facing soaring operating costs and reductions in funding and corporate sponsorships, coaches face the ongoing pressures of building a winning team.  Their recruitment choices often lead to selecting athletes which surpass the color line and several coaches make no apologies for their choices for all-white teams.  Citations include College Prospects of America.
