M. Mikell Johnson, author “The African American Woman Golfer: Her Legacy.” Dr. Johnson has been playing golf for over 30 years and is a member of the Traces Women’s Golf Club (Florence, SC). Dr. Johnson earned academic degrees from South Carolina State University, Hunter College, and Rutgers University.
Dr. Johnson has been a research scientist at the Sloan-Kettering Cancer Institute, the College of Physicians & Surgeons, Squibb, Schering-Plough, Ciba-Geigy, and the FDA. Since her retirement from scientific research, Dr. Johnson has devoted herself to golf, volunteering at major tournaments sponsored by the LPGA, PGA and Nationwide Tours. Her second book, “Heroines of African American Golf--The Past, The Present, and the Future,” is scheduled to be released early in 2011.
Dr. Johnson has especially devoted her time to the pursuit of the history of African American women in the sport of golf and her move to the Carolinas has brought her to a mecca of golf courses. Her first book examines the sport to uncover black women who have been involved in the game for the past 75 years. It tells of how these women broke both color and gender barriers to become golfers, as it traces the history of how African American women got involved in golf. |
