Dennis Morgan
President and Youth Director
Midwest Golf Association
Dennis Morgan serves as President and Youth Director of the Midwest Golf Association based in Suwanee, Georgia. The Association is committed to upholding the integrity of Amateur Golf and promoting Junior Golf as set forth by golf’s governing bodies – The United States Golf Association (USGA), Professional Golf Association (PGA), Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) and the American Junior Golf Association (AJGA). Morgan is committed to rebuilding the Midwest Golf Association and making the Midwest Golf Association’s National Junior Golf Championship one of the countries best and well run tournaments for minority youth.
Morgan is a native Detroiter now living in Suwanee, GA, and he was inducted into the African American Golfers Hall of Fame for Golf Administration in May 2007 in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. He retired from the Detroit Edison Company, where he got his start in golf, and began to play the sport so that I would not be left out of lunch time conversations. Quickly getting hooked on the game as so many other people have, he took professional lessons and has been enjoying the game ever since.
After two years of playing and taking lessons he was able to shoot in the mid 80”s. That’s when he decided a join an amateur golf organization, the Inkster Golf Club. There he was totally out classed by golfers like John Henderson, Jesse Smith and Charles Horne, so he join the newly formed Diehl’s Golf League. There he met a lot of golfers that played his brand of golf.
After two years there, the Diehl Golf League changed its name to the Detroit Golf League and he was elected Tournament Director. He has been a member of the Detroit Golf League every since. The Detroit Golf League joined the Midwest District Golf Association of the United Golfers Association at the winter meeting of 1979 in Cleveland, OH. “That’s where I began to meet some of the most interesting people that I would ever in life meet and grow very close too. The people that I met at these meeting have become life long friends. They all played an instrumental part in my development as a golfer and a man,” says Morgan.
“First there was Anna Robinson, Agnes G. Williams and Dorothy Abbitt of the Chicago Women’s Golf Club. Frederick Haygood, Ramon Toliver Bill Dickey and Charles Cohen along with the late Thomas Larry were the Tournament Masters. If there was anything to learn about hosting and running tournaments, it would be learned from these gentlemen. Then there were guys like Porter Parnell, President of the United Golfers Association (UGA) who ran one of the best meetings one could run. I learned how to run a meeting from Porter. He was as smooth as silk in the Chairman’s seat.”
Presently as President and Youth Director of the Midwest Golf Association, Morgan says, “It is not easy to raise finances for minority youth when we don’t have a solid foundation from which to draw, however, I will continue to give it my best shot in hopes of helping other youth to reach their goals of higher education and golfing ability.”
As a member of the Midwest District Golf Association, the United Golfers Association and the Detroit Golf League, Morgan has held the following elected or appointed positions:
-President – Midwest Golf Association and Detroit Golf League
-Vice President – Midwest Golf Association (under Dorothy Abbitt)
-Tournament Director – Midwest Golf Association, Detroit Golf League and UGA
-Asst. Tournament Director – Midwest Golf Association & United Golfers Assoc.
