What's In Your Bag?
I remember playing
in my first PGA Tour event the Booze Allen Classic; I had just Monday
Qualified but was in desperate need of a new driver. At the time
I was playing Cleveland irons and wedges but, hadn’t considered
them in the driver category. Well, like a kid in a candy store I
went to the TaylorMade, Titleist and Callaway Tour Vans and had
them make me a driver.
My caddy and I then
headed to the range to find my new stick. About 30 minutes into
the session the Cleveland golf rep handed me a driver and said “just
try it.” After the first ball I knew I had found my driver
and since then I have been using Cleveland Golf top to bottom.
I received my new clubs from Cleveland
Golf last month: The 588 cavity back forged irons and the 588 satin
wedges. I can honestly say these are the BEST irons I have ever
held. Great look, great feel, great top-line, workability…it
just doesn’t get any better. These clubs are perfect. Try
Them!
What’s in my Bag?
Driver: Cleveland DST
Tour 9 Degree, Miazaki 83x 3 Metal: Cleveland Hybore Tour 15 degree, Diamanna
Blue Bore 83x Hybrid: Cleveland DST 18 Degree, Aldila 83x Irons: 588 CB Forged PW-4, KBS Tours X shafts,
half inch long, standard lie and loft Wedges: 588 Satins 52/56/60, KBS Tour X shafts,
1 Degree flat Putter: Edel Ball: Srixon XV
You’ll notice the longest iron
I carry in my bag is the four. In 2008, I replaced the 2 and 3 irons
with a 19 degree hybrid and a 52 degree Gap Wedge. Why? Prior to
replacing these clubs I had a major gap between my SW (110yds) and
my PW (140yds). This meant that I was manipulating my swing too
much to fill in these yardages. That year I went on to finish 5th
on the Canadian Tour’s Order of Merit and had the best season
of my career to that point. I replaced the 30 yard gap in the scoring
zone with a 25 yard gap between 215 and 240 yards. I became a better
player by simply changing my equipment.
This month, check the lie and lofts on your irons. Get on a launch
monitor and find out exactly how far you hit every club in the bag.
Eliminate your gaps and shoot better scores. Sometimes it is the
“Arrow” and not you.
Before I go, CONGRATULATIONS to my good friend Andy Walker, who
will be making his PGA Tour debut at this month’s Northern
Trust Open. Andy and I have known each other since the age of 13
and began our professional journeys together. We’ve competed
against each other on the Nationwide Tour, The Mini Tours (Hooters,
Tear Drop, etc.) and most recently The Canadian Tour. He and I talk
extensively about how to increase the participation of African American’s
in the game of golf and what we can do to be positive role models
for the next generation to follow. I don’t think there is
anyone more deserving of the Northern Trust’s Diversity Exemption
than he is. Good Luck “A Dub!”
